      GREENVILLE, N.C. — Funeral services for Joseph Marvin Taft, 98, were conducted Friday, May 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery, directed by Wilkerson Funeral Home of Greenville, N.C.

      Mr. Taft died Wednesday, May 26, at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Greenville and was the son of the late Edmund Hoover and Gertrude Chesson Taft. After completing his education, he began working in the family business, Taft Furniture Company, where he was active for more than 70 years. Mr. Taft served as a member for the Greenville City Council for eight years. He served on the Greenville School Board for 21 years and served on the Board of Trustees for Pitt Community College for 26 years. He was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church for virtually all of his life where he served in various capacities, including serving as chairman of the Administrative Board.

      Mr. Taft joined the Kiwanis Club of Greenville at the age of 22, serving as president in 1943. In 1996 he was honored with the George F. Hixon Award, and in 2002, was honored for his 75 years of service in Kiwanis.

      In addition to his parents, Mr. Taft was preceded in death by a son, Jasper Winslow Taft; brothers, William H. Taft and E. Hoover Taft Jr.; and sisters, Gertrude Massey and Florence Blount.

      He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Winslow Taft; daughter, Anna Taft Parker and husband, Charles, of Fuquay–Varina, N.C.; sons, Joseph M. Taft Jr. and wife, Camilla, of Greenville, Robert E. Taft and wife, Rebecca, of Hartsville, Louis W. Taft and wife, Pam, of Greenville, and Edgar W. Taft of Greenville; a former daughter–in–law, Penny Taft of Greenville; 10 grandchildren, Lou Taft Welch, Camilla Taft Hicks, Martha Taft Kiesling, Joseph M. Taft III, Edwin Parker, John Parker, Natalie Taft, Benjamin Taft, Christopher Taft and Janie Taft; and six great–grandchildren.
